Many immigrant families—particularly those of African descent—arrive in Canada full of hope and expectation, only to encounter unexpected challenges in parenting, child discipline, and family relationships. Differences in culture, school systems, social norms, and legal expectations around child welfare often create confusion, tension, and stress within families. When these challenges are not properly understood or addressed early, they can lead to family disharmony, emotional distress, and in some cases, intervention by social services or law enforcement.
Building Capacity for Culturally Responsive Parenting is a strategic community initiative designed to proactively address these realities. It is a six targeted programs created to strengthen immigrant families by equipping parents and youths with culturally informed knowledge, practical tools, and emotional intelligence to navigate parenting in Canada effectively—without losing their values, identity, and faith.
